Watching the sun rise over Angkor Wat is one of the most profound experiences in Southeast Asia. The ancient temple's five towers emerge from darkness, reflected perfectly in the lotus ponds below, as the sky shifts from deep indigo to orange and gold.
The best viewing spot is the reflecting pool on the western causeway, directly in front of the main entrance. Arrive by 5:00 AM to secure a prime position — later arrivals find standing room only during peak season (November to March). The gate opens at 5:30 AM.
For a quieter experience, walk to the left side of the reflecting pool. You'll still have a magnificent view of the towers but with far fewer people. This is also the better angle for photography as the sun rises slightly to the right of the central tower, creating beautiful asymmetric lighting.
Angkor Wat tickets: a 1-day pass costs $37 USD, a 3-day pass is $62 USD, and a 7-day pass is $72 USD. The 3-day pass is the most popular choice as it gives you enough time to properly explore Angkor Wat, Angkor Thom, and the outer temples without rushing. Tickets must be purchased at the official ticket center — they cannot be bought at the gate.
After sunrise, spend the morning exploring the temple's vast galleries and intricate bas-reliefs depicting scenes from Hindu mythology before the heat and crowds intensify after 9 AM. The central sanctuary and the Gallery of Bas-reliefs (featuring 800m of carved scenes) are must-sees.
